A wise man once said, "If fishing is like religion, then fly fishing is high church". If you think that sounds a little elevated for an enjoyable hobby, someone else once said "Fly fishing is the most fun you can have standing up."If you agree with either one of these statements, you're sure to have a wonderful fly fishing holiday in England.

England is a keen fly fisherman's dream destination. The climate and the proliferation of mountain streams, rivers and lakes makes for many great angling locations. The rivers and lakes are plentifully stocked, including fishes such as Brown Trout, Grayling, Rainbow Trout and Atlantic Salmon.

Fly fishing in Cheddar, visitors will come across a whole bunch of top quality fishing spots in and near this South Western town. One of the best stocked fisheries in Europe is situated in the lake at Chew Valley, which is surrounded by beautiful meadows and woods. Along with nearby Blagdon Lake, it recently hosted the World Fly Fishing Championships, evidence of just how excellent the sport is in this region. Anglers visiting the lake find it a rewarding experience using a variety of fishing methods and fly patterns, and the size and condition of the trout caught at Chew is impressive. The lake's relatively shallow waters cover an area that was once fertile farmland, which means that the lake supports rich aquatic life necessary for good trout fishing. Motor boats can be hired at Chew Valley, so that you can get into the best spots in this ideal fly fishing location.

Looking to do some still water fly fishing in Cheddar? Head out to Blagdon Lake. Situated against the steep northern face of the Mendip Hills, this water provides great trout fishing. The sport is good from both the bank and boat, due to the lake's long narrow shape. Points and promontories provide access to deeper water from the bank, while shallow, sheltered bays of calmer water also offer excellent sport. A boat is definitely the answer if you'd like to explore the remoter areas however. There is a pretty fishing lodge on the lake's south shore, selling flies and other equipment, and providing up-to-the-minute information about the fishing conditions on the lake.

Beautiful Dartmoor in Devon is a superb destination for a fly fishing holiday, with every kind of fish imaginable available in its waters, including brown trout, rainbow trout, pike, carp and bream. Dartmoor has many well-stocked reservoirs, all offering top-quality fishing. The River Dart, and its tributaries, are also fantastic for fly fishing, and are open all year round.

For a special and luxurious fly fishing holiday, stay at one of the many hotels in England, that offer fly fishing on their premises, or which arrange fly fishing trips as part of their services. Fly fishing in Okehampton? Head over to the Arundel Arms, a fisherman's hotel situated west of Dartmoor in a valley of five rivers, the Tamar and its tributaries. The hotel has 30km of their own fishing, including wild brown trout, sea trout and salmon. They also have a lake stocked with some impressively sized brown and rainbow trout, and they offer fly fishing instruction, so you can hone your angling skills.

It stands to reason that a region famous for its spectacular lakes would provide many opportunities for fly fishing. The Lake District, in the north west county of Cumbria, is as famous for its beautiful lakes as it is for its fishing. Fly fishing in Windermere, Buttermere and Coniston, the fisherman has an excellent choice of both stillwater and river fishing, These lakes are extensive, but the small tarns (mountain lakes) are also great challenges if you'd like to really get away from it all into the mountains.

Keen to do some more fly fishing in Windermere? Esthwaite Water is the largest stocked lake in the North West of England and is set amidst awe-inspiring scenery.. A glacial lake set in the Silurian hills of the Lake District, it offers a variety of fishes and has both deep basins and shallow bays. It is restocked weekly during the fishing season, and so is guaranteed to provide a rewarding fly fishing experience.

The Lake District's rivers, Derwent, Kent, Lune and Esk, are Salmon rivers that also have Sea Trout runs and resident Brown Trout. The River Eden and its tributaries, the Lowther and Eamont, provide excellent Brown Trout fly fishing as well as containing Grayling and Salmon.

Fly fishing in England's beautiful countryside will be a relaxing, inspiring experience. You'll definitely come back with a few prize photographs of some impressive catches, or at least some convincing stories of 'the one that got away!'
